Zoe is an African American screenwriter with a beautiful script that embodies diversity. Her movie stars a voluptuous black woman, who is not from the hood, interacting with Mexicans, who are not narcos. In her quest to get this non-traditional movie sold in Hollywood, she explains to a producer, “Diversity does not mean having more black characters, it means telling universal narratives through diverse perspectives.” But the executives feel differently; and as they give her feedback, the audience watches her unique movie slowly become an all-white romantic comedy.
The movie shifts visually back and forth between the absurd reality of Zoe trying to sell her script in Hollywood, to the actual movie that she is writing with a beautiful love story set against the backdrop of an authentic Mexican town. “Una Great Movie” is a witty movie within a movie that reflects on love, loneliness, and the choices that we make.
